Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa) is a Cytokine that binds to TNFRSF1A/TNFR1 and TNFRSF1B/TNFBR. TNFR1 is expressed on most cell types, unlike TNFR2, which is expressed mainly on immune cells. This inflammatory cytokine is secreted by macrophages, monocytes, neutrophils, T cells, and NK-cells following stimulation by bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). TNFα functions to stimulate phagocytosis in macrophages, chemoattractant neutrophils, increase insulin resistance, and induce fever.
